PHOENIX – Matt Chapman’s injury came at the best possible time, if such a thing exists.
Chapman was placed on the 10-day IL with an abdominal strain, the Giants announced on Wednesday. The move is the latest blow in a series of injuries the club has sustained recently, though the veteran infielder told reporters that he has been experiencing discomfort since mid-April, and it was at its worst in San Francisco’s 8-2 loss to the Diamondbacks on Tuesday.
The Giants recalled infielder Christian Koss from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move.
Manager Tony Vitello said that the 33-year-old Chapman underwent an MRI in Arizona on Wednesday, which revealed the strain. The injury likely would have forced him to miss some time under normal circumstances, but Chapman was already going to be away from the team given his upcoming paternity leave.
Vitello said Chapman almost assuredly would have been on a plane back to San Francisco on Wednesday to be with his wife, Taylor, as they prepare for their child’s arrival. He’s expected to rejoin the team around the All-Star break.
“I'm sure he'd want to plow through if he can,” Vitello said. “If you don't let it heal properly, it's probably never going to go away.”
Chapman has remained healthy for the majority of his MLB career. He has appeared in 140 games or more in six of his 10 seasons, and just missed that mark last year (128 games). He’s hitting .235 with seven home runs and 42 RBIs this season.

Koss was in the Giants’ lineup against the D-backs on Wednesday, marking his 11th Major League appearance of 2026, and first since May 10. He has appeared in 86 career games, batting .250 while recording three home runs and 23 RBIs.
Vitello said Koss, along with rookie Jonah Cox, will be an important part of San Francisco’s infield while the club waits for its everyday players to return. Koss struggled at the plate earlier this season (1-for-14), but now gets another crack at the lineup.
“It might be a fresh start deal, where, because he's got a clean slate coming in, he feels good at the plate,” Vitello said of Koss. “No matter what, you're going to get a guy that's hooked up on defense and can really play.”
