Young girl meets her hero at O's game

BALTIMORE -- Everyone needs a hero. For women who want a career in sports, there have been too few of those idols for too long. But that's changing, as evidenced by a wholesome moment captured on Tuesday night at Camden Yards.

Caught on social media, and on the Orioles' broadcast prior to their 7-3 win over the Royals, was a young Baltimore fan. Not just any fan, though.

This was a Melanie Newman fan, with a sign and everything.

Newman made headlines and history in 2020 when she became the Orioles' radio play-by-play voice. Then, she made history again as one of five women on MLB's first all-women broadcast this season.

The young fan, Ellee, was able to meet Newman after the game, exchange hugs and have her poster signed.

Needless to say, between Newman's talent and the O's generosity, Baltimore has a lifelong fan. And, maybe, one who will join Newman in the booth some day.
