PITTSBURGH -- Following Thursday night's 12-6 win over the Pirates, the Mets announced they optioned right-hander Corey Oswalt to Triple-A Las Vegas to make room for left-hander Jason Vargas, who will return from the disabled list to start against the Pirates on Friday.
Vargas, 35, made his last start for the Mets on June 19 before a strained right calf injury landed him on the DL. He's made nine starts for New York this season and is 2-6 with an 8.60 ERA
Oswalt was recalled from Triple-A on Monday and made a start against the Padres on Wednesday. The 24-year-old rookie struck out four while surrendering a pair of earned runs over five innings and earned his first Major League win.
