Mets-Yanks postponed Monday; split DH today

NEW YORK -- This year’s much-anticipated Subway Series clash between the Mets and Yankees will have to wait another day.

Monday’s series opener was postponed due to rain, which blanketed Yankee Stadium throughout the afternoon and was expected to continue throughout the evening. The teams decided to postpone the game until Tuesday, as part of a split-admission doubleheader with start times at 1:05 p.m. ET and 7:05.

Zack Wheeler, who was originally scheduled to pitch Tuesday’s game, will shift up to start the afternoon contest opposite right-hander Masahiro Tanaka. Monday’s scheduled starter, Jason Vargas, will start the nightcap against fellow lefty James Paxton.

Both Mets pitchers have enjoyed recent runs of success on the mound, with Wheeler sporting a 3.87 ERA over his last 11 starts and Vargas posting a 1.85 ERA in his last seven. Vargas, though, has struggled at Yankee Stadium; he’s 0-5 with a 7.53 ERA there since the park opened in 2009.

The Mets will look for better results from Vargas, while their fans will seek bragging rights against the first-place Yankees.

“Obviously it’s great for the city, it’s great for the fans,” Mets manager Mickey Callaway said. “It’s energetic. We’re pumped up to be here. It’s something special to be a part of in the greatest city in the world.”
