Elian Peña chose quite a way to extend a 12-game hitting streak with Single-A St. Lucie.
The Mets’ No. 4 prospect went deep twice on Tuesday, the first multi-homer game of his young career, during a 3-2 loss for St. Lucie against Jupiter at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.
Peña hit his sixth home run of the season to lead off the game. He turned on a 2-1 sweeper, sending the solo shot out at 101 mph.
Peña then knocked his seventh long ball of the campaign in the fifth inning, at the time giving St. Lucie a 2-0 lead. He received another inside breaking ball and pulled it 100 mph down the right-field line.
The 18-year-old shortstop wasn’t quite done. He rocketed a 106.5 mph single in the seventh inning to give him a 3-for-5 day overall. This red-hot streak -- which began on July 25 -- has helped Peña raise his season batting average by 20 points to .275. Over the 12 games, he’s slashing .385/.448/.635 with seven extra-base hits, three long balls and 10 RBIs
Peña, a 2025 signing out of the Dominican Republic, has shaken off a tough stretch in May and June to turn in solid numbers in his second season in professional baseball. He’s up to a .785 OPS this season while playing 91 games, easily surpassing the 55 he played a year ago.
