Surgery-bound Flores misses Wild Card Game

NEW YORK -- Versatile Mets infielder Wilmer Flores wasn't able to return for Wednesday night's National League Wild Card Game and will undergo surgery to repair the hamate bone in his right hand.
Mets general manager Sandy Alderson provided this update a few hours before the Mets were eliminated from the postseason with a 3-0 loss to the Giants at Citi Field. Flores had been sidelined since injuring his right hand/wrist in a collision with Braves catcher A.J. Pierzynski on Sept. 10.

Flores' absence forced the Mets to start left-handed hitter James Loney at first base against southpaw Madison Bumgarner. Loney went 0-for-1 with a walk before being replaced in the eighth inning by right-handed-hitting Eric Campbell, who struck out as a pinch-hitter in his only at-bat.
Before the injury, Flores was one of baseball's most productive sluggers against left-handed pitching, batting .340 with 11 home runs in 107 plate appearances. Overall, Flores batted .267 with 16 homers.
