Stat of the Day: Sept./Oct. 2021

Oct. 3: Marlins 5, Phillies 4 -- Rookies who rake
Miami rookies hit 53 home runs this season -- second most in club history, trailing only the 2006 Marlins (76 homers).

Oct. 2: Marlins 3, Phillies 1 -- Home means everything
The Marlins secured a winning home record (41-39) for the first time since 2017 (42-36). Miami went 25-56 on the road this season.

Oct. 1: Phillies 5, Marlins 0 -- Feelin' 200
Sandy Alcantara became the fifth pitcher in Marlins franchise history to record 200 innings and 200 strikeouts in the same season, joining Al Leiter (1996), Kevin Brown ('97), Ryan Dempster (2000) and A.J. Burnett ('02). Only two other Major League pitchers have achieved the feat in '21: National League Cy Young Award candidates Walker Buehler and Zack Wheeler.

Sept. 30: Mets 12, Marlins 3 -- Marlins' road woes
The Marlins finished 25-56 (.309 winning percentage) on the road in 2021, the second-worst mark in franchise history behind the 1998 ballclub (23-58, .284). Last season, they went 20-14 (.588) in the shortened campaign.

Sept. 29: Marlins 3, Mets 2 -- Rare late rally
The Marlins improved to 6-68 when trailing after seven innings.

Sept. 28: Mets 5, Marlins 2 (Game 1); Mets 2, Marlins 1 (9) (Game 2) -- Deep Fish
Jesús Sánchez homered in the second inning of Game 2 of the doubleheader, recording the highest exit velocity (113.9 mph) and second-farthest tater (445 feet) of his career.

Sept. 26: Rays 3, Marlins 2 -- Interleague woes
The Marlins finished with their worst winning percentage (.150) in Interleague Play in franchise history, going 3-17.

Sept. 25: Rays 7, Marlins 3 -- Sandy's lucky number? 200!
Sandy Alcantara reached 200 innings on the season for the first time in his career on Austin Meadows' groundout to open the sixth. He became the 15th Marlins pitcher to achieve the feat (22nd overall instance by a Marlin), and the first since Mark Buehrle in 2012. Josh Johnson was the last right-hander to do so in '09.

Sept. 24: Rays 8, Marlins 0 -- The other Sandy on the mound
Sandy León didn't allow a run in the eighth inning, giving him three scoreless outings in 2021. He extended his franchise record to five pitching appearances for a position player this season.

Sept. 22: Nationals 7, Marlins 5 -- Fortes' third homer
Nick Fortes became the 40th player in Major League history to hit three home runs in his first five career big league games, and the first since Seattle’s Kyle Lewis in September 2019.

Sept. 21: Nationals 7, Marlins 1 -- Fortes' second homer
With his fifth-inning homer on Tuesday, Nick Fortes became the first Marlin to go deep in each of his first two Major League starts.

Sept. 20: Marlins 8, Nationals 7 (10 innings) -- Chisholm's multihomer game
Jazz Chisholm Jr. recorded the first multihomer game of his career and the seventh for the Marlins in 2021. He is three homers shy of a 20-20 season.

Sept. 19: Marlins 6, Pirates 5 (10 innings) -- Miami avoids the plank
Lewin Díaz hit his first career walk-off home run and the third of the season for the Marlins. It was their second walk-off homer against the Pirates all time. The other came on April 4, 2008, off the bat of Mike Jacobs.

Sept. 18: Pirates 6, Marlins 3 -- History-making catchers
According to STATS, Payton Henry and Nick Fortes are the first duo to debut as starting catchers on consecutive days since the St. Louis Browns' Joe Jenkins and Jack Enzenroth on April 30 and May 1, 1914, respectively. More so, with his two-run homer in the fifth inning, Fortes became the eighth Marlins player to go deep in his Major League debut. Isan Díaz was the most recent to do so on Aug. 5, 2019, against Jacob deGrom at Citi Field.

Sept. 17: Pirates 2, Marlins 1 -- Passed ball woes
Payton Henry recorded a passed ball in the sixth inning of his debut, marking Miami's MLB-leading 24th of the season.

Sept. 15: Marlins 8, Nationals 6 -- Rally caps come in handy
The Marlins improved to 2-66 when trailing after eight innings, scoring four runs in the ninth on a single from Miguel Rojas, a forceout from Bryan De La Cruz and a two-run homer from Jesús Sánchez to rally for the victory.

Sept. 14: Nationals 8, Marlins 2 -- Luzardo can't miss bats
Jesús Luzardo was unable to record a whiff on two of his four offerings on Tuesday -- his curveball and his sinker. He turned to those for 54 of his 86 pitches against the Nats.

Sept. 13: Marlins 3, Nationals 0 -- 12th season with 100 steals
With Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s stolen base in the first inning, the Marlins have 100 on the season for the 12th time in club history -- and first since 2015. That club finished third in the National League with 112.

Sept. 12: Braves 5, Marlins 3 -- Sánchez's tape-measure shot
Jesús Sánchez homered in every game of the series in Atlanta, and he saved his best for last. His first-inning blast on Sunday went a projected 460 feet, which is the Marlins’ longest home run since Aug. 14, 2019 (Jorge Alfaro, 473 feet). Current Brave Adam Duvall has the next-longest blast (458 feet).

Sept. 11: Marlins 6, Braves 4 -- Jazz is elite
Jazz Chisholm Jr. showed off his speed when he recorded his first career bunt single in the first inning with a base hit that traveled down the third base line. He reached a sprint speed of 30.7 ft/sec, which is above both the 30+ ft/sec threshold for "elite" MLB speed and his season average sprint speed of 29.1 ft/sec.

Sept. 10: Braves 6, Marlins 2 -- Sánchez ends drought
Jesús Sánchez's first-inning home run was welcomed, as it was only the club's second home run in its last eight road games dating back to Aug. 10. The Marlins aren't lacking for power overall, though, since they have 18 home runs in 18 home games during that same stretch.

Sept. 9: Marlins 3, Mets 2 -- Chisholm in elite company
With his go-ahead shot in the eighth inning, Jazz Chisholm Jr. became the second Marlins rookie to have 15 homers and 15 stolen bases in a season, joining Hanley Ramirez (2006). They are also the only middle infielders in club history to accomplish the feat.

Sept. 8: Marlins 2, Mets 1 (10 innings) -- Alcantara's deep starts
Sandy Alcantara's stretch of six consecutive starts of at least 6 1/3 innings is the longest for a Miami pitcher since Aníbal Sánchez (April 21-May 19, 2012). Alcantara also completed nine frames for the first time since a complete game on Sept. 8, 2019.

Sept. 7: Mets 9, Marlins 4 -- More defensive lapses
The Marlins have committed at least one error in five straight games, with a total of 10 during that span.

Sept. 5: Phillies 4, Marlins 3 (10 innings) -- Searching for hits
The Marlins tied a season low with two hits in the series finale. It was previously done three other times (all in nine-inning games) and most recently on July 9 against the Braves.

Sept. 4: Marlins 3, Phillies 2 -- Brinson's late heroics
Lewis Brinson knocked the go-ahead two-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning against Archie Bradley. Seven of his 24 career home runs have come in the eighth or later.

Sept. 3: Marlins 10, Phillies 3 -- 1st 'W' since 2017
Steven Okert picked up his first Major League win since May 3, 2017, when he was a member of the Giants. He recorded the final out of the sixth inning in relief of Jesús Luzardo.

Sept. 2: Mets 4, Marlins 3 -- Two first-pitch leadoff home runs
Miguel Rojas and Jonathan Villar both hit first-pitch leadoff homers on Thursday, marking the first time in a game that both teams' leadoff men have hit first-pitch homers since the Major Leagues started tracking pitch counts in 1988.
