Taylor, Treinen lead Nationals over Cardinals

JUPITER, Fla. -- Behind RBIs from four different players in their starting lineup, the Nationals topped the Cardinals, 5-2, at Roger Dean Stadium on Sunday in the first of five spring meetings between the two clubs.
Washington scored its first two runs (one earned) off Cardinals right-hander Deck McGuire, who is likely one-and-done as a Grapefruit League starter this spring. Michael Taylor drove home the first run with an RBI single. Trea Turner, the Nationals' No. 2 prospect according to MLBPipeline.com, followed with an RBI groundout.
McGuire, a non-roster invitee in camp, threw 20 of 37 pitches for strikes.
Nationals starter Blake Treinen sailed through his spring debut, retiring six of the seven Cardinals batters he faced while throwing 15 of his 27 pitches for strikes. Particularly notable was who Treinen retired. The Cardinals' left-handed hitters went 0-for-4 against Treinen, who allowed lefties to hit him at a .336 clip last season.

Washington ran its lead to four in the third with a pair of runs off Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal. Rosenthal allowed a sacrifice fly to Matt Skole and an RBI single to Jose Lobaton after taking a comebacker off his right leg.

The Cardinals pulled within two in the fifth inning behind an RBI double from Brandon Moss and run-scoring groundout by Nick Plummer. Plummer, the organization's first-round pick in the 2015 MLB Draft, was called up from Minor League camp to start on Sunday. He also made a diving catch along the warning track in his appearance.

Both of St. Louis' runs came off Washington reliever Burke Badenhop, who allowed three hits in his one-inning appearance.
Cardinals outfielder Randal Grichuk notched his second two-hit game of Spring Training with a pair of doubles.
Up next for the Cardinals: Adam Wainwright will make the first of his four starts leading up to his Opening Day assignment on Monday when the Cardinals host the defending National League champion Mets at Roger Dean Stadium at 12:05 pm CT. It will be Wainwright's first start since April 25, 2015, when he ruptured his left Achilles tendon.
Up next for the Nationals: They return to Space Coast Stadium and play the Marlins for the second time in less than a week on Monday at 1:05 p.m. ET. The last time they met was Friday with the Marlins winning, 5-4. Right-hander Tanner Roark will make the start against the Marlins. This will be his second start of the spring. He pitched two scoreless innings against the Rays last week.
