BALTIMORE -- Marlins infielder Miguel Rojas exited Friday night's 2-0 win over the Orioles after being hit in the left hand and then right cheek by a 97-mph fastball in the sixth inning.
The Marlins announced later in the game that Rojas has a hand contusion and is day to day. Manager Don Mattingly said X-rays were negative, and the team will evaluate Rojas' hand again on Saturday.
Rojas, who missed more than two months with a fractured right thumb last season, also expressed optimism.
"I can move my hand normal," Rojas said." Last year when I had the broken bone [in my hand], I couldn't do that. I feel blessed that it wasn't anything worse."
Rojas tried to turn away from the 0-2 offering from Orioles starter Kevin Gausman. Instead, it caught his hand as he gripped the bat, then redirected toward his face.
Normally a shortstop, Rojas has been filling in at third base for Martín Prado, who has been out with a strained left hamstring since May 26. Yadiel Rivera pinch-ran for Rojas and took over at third.
