A charitable auction featuring bats autographed by some of the best players in baseball is just one of the ways MLB, along with its 30 clubs and various partners, will commemorate the third annual Lou Gehrig Day on June 2.

'It takes teamwork': Lou Gehrig Day just the start of fight against ALS

In a continued effort to raise awareness and research funds for ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), otherwise known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, MLB will auction the bats at auctions.mlb.com to benefit the Healey & AMG Center for ALS. The auction will feature 30 autographed and authenticated Lou Gehrig Day bats. Each team will be represented by one player selected by MLB researcher and analyst Sarah Langs.

The players were picked based on a personal connection to ALS, their support of the ALS Community, or a symbolic connection to Lou Gehrig by either their passion for the game, their character or a unique statistical connection.

In honor of Langs, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2021, illuminated wooden stars known as “A Langs Star” will be displayed in each TV broadcast booth during each game on June 2. The stars, made possible with help from ESPN’s Karl Ravech, woodworker Christopher Owens -- known as “StarMan” -- and Project ALS, will be available for fans to purchase at StarsforSarah.org. All proceeds will benefit Project ALS on Sarah’s behalf.

Additionally, fans will have the opportunity to bid on a Priceless® New York Yankees™ experience provided by Mastercard and the sALSa (Spreading ALS Awareness) for a Cure team.

On the field, all players, managers and coaches will wear a special “Lou Gehrig Day” patch on their uniforms. Red “4-ALS” wristbands will be available to be worn in-game, in addition to commemorative base jewels and lineup cards.
