Mookie not playing around in 'Toy Story 5' TV spot with daughter

PHOENIX -- As baseball has evolved with time, technology has increasingly become a part of the game. But at the end of the day, it's all about going out on the field and playing.

That concept is at the crux of a new promotional spot for Disney and Pixar's "Toy Story 5," starring Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts and his 7-year-old daughter, Kynlee.

"Anything I can do with my family, I'm always gonna do it," Betts said. "She seemed like she really enjoyed it."

"Toy Story 5," which will be released in theaters on June 19, follows the beloved toys as they navigate a new toy making waves at playtime: Lilypad, a tablet device. In the spot, Betts is trying to encourage Kynlee to join him in hitting on the field, but she's preoccupied with playing a game on Lilypad in the dugout.

Enter Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie and Slinky. Just as they do in the animated films, the toys execute a covert mission. This time, they help Betts by strategically placing a baseball by Kynlee's feet. She picks up the ball, sets down Lilypad and at last runs out to the field to join her dad.

Betts catches a glimpse of the toys in the dugout just before they collapse, inanimate, as they do whenever they're at risk of being seen by people in the films. "No, there's no way," Betts says, before turning his attention back to the field.

By nature of his job, Betts is a performer, both on and off the diamond. He plays in front of tens of thousands of fans every night. Not only does he have his own podcast, but he also co-hosted last year's MLB Awards with comedian Roy Wood Jr.

As it turns out, Kynlee takes after her dad in that sense. She loves being in front of a camera at home, where she films herself doing interviews and showing people around the house.

"She enjoys all that type of stuff," Betts said. "Anytime she can do anything, really, with a camera … she gets to be someone else. And not that she doesn't enjoy being herself, but when you get in front of a camera, you can be a different personality, you can make up a personality, and the camera usually makes it look good."

Home videos are one thing, but a promo spot that can be seen worldwide is another. For Betts and Kynlee, that made the collaboration with "Toy Story 5" that much more special.

"I think that's why it was so much fun, because she doesn't realize it," Betts said. "And even though I know it, I can really just kind of be in the moment and enjoy something that she really enjoys. It's more family time. We don't get a lot of family time during the season, so to be able to do that with her was a lot of fun."
