Castellanos day to day with bruised wrist; X-rays negative

PHILADELPHIA -- Phillies right fielder Nick Castellanos suffered only a bruise to his right wrist on Thursday night at Citizens Bank Park.

He feels fortunate.

He left an 8-7 loss to the Mets in the sixth inning after he got hit by a pitch on the wrist. The Phillies said initial X-rays were negative, but he will be evaluated again on Friday.

His status is day to day.

“X-ray’s were clean,” Castellanos said. “I just wanted to see a clean X-ray. It’s the wrist I broke last year, so I’m not a stranger to getting hit in the hand area.”

Mets right-hander Adonis Medina hit Castellanos with an 86.7 mph changeup. The pitch got away from Medina, who tried to throw it down in the zone. Phillies athletic trainer Paul Buchheit and manager Joe Girardi walked down the first-base line with Castellanos and examined his hand and wrist at first base before removing him from the game.

The Mets and Phillies had an incident on Sunday night at Citi Field. Phillies reliever Cristopher Sánchez hit Francisco Lindor with a 93.8 mph fastball in the eighth inning. It was the 20th time the Mets had been hit by a pitch this season, including six times by the Phillies in six games. Mets right-hander Yoan López then threw twice inside to Kyle Schwarber in the ninth. Schwarber was not hit, but warnings were issued to López and both dugouts. López then hit Alec Bohm in the back with a changeup, but he was not ejected because it was determined to be unintentional.

Mets manager Buck Showalter got fined and suspended for one game for the pitches to Schwarber. López got suspended three games and fined.

Girardi said on Thursday that he considered it a dead issue and said Major League Baseball did not talk to the Phillies and Mets before the series opener.
