Jones (4-for-4), Schoop power Orioles past A's

BALTIMORE -- Adam Jones homered twice and matched a career high with four hits, leading the Orioles to a 7-3, series-opening win over the Athletics on Monday night.
Jones, who has 24 homers on the season, put the O's on the board with a solo shot in the bottom of the second inning off Oakland righty Chris Smith. He struck again in the fifth, on a two-run homer off of reliever Ryan Dull that followed Jonathan Schoop's three-run blast. Schoop chased Smith from the game with his career-high and team-leading 27th homer, with Jones giving the O's back-to-back jacks for the 10th time this season.

"Adam's done that a lot and it never goes unnoticed or unappreciated or assumed, more importantly," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "Jon obviously had a big blow there, but can't tell you how hard it is, as hard as Adam plays as long as he plays, and then mid-to-late August you're still able to do that. That's one of the things that separates Adam."
Welington Castillo also homered for the O's, who entered the day four games back in the American League Wild Card race.

Smith was charged with six runs (five earned) over 4 1/3 innings, while Orioles starter Wade Miley went six-plus innings and held the A's to two runs for his second quality start in three games.
"We really crowded them in again and kept with that game plan," Miley said of facing the A's for the second time in two weeks. "That was kind of the plan going in. Welly did a good job of staying and attacking there. I felt like I threw the ball pretty well. There were some walks in there, but pretty close misses. I'm a lot closer to the plate than I was a couple weeks ago. So that's something positive to build on."

Jed Lowrie homered for the A's off of Miley in the sixth, and Boog Powell went deep off of Brad Brach in the eighth for his first Major League home run.

"It didn't seem real," said Powell, who reached base safely in all three appearances. "That's what I always try to do, just get on base for the guys behind me. That's my goal. Sometimes you run into balls like I did tonight."

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Miley wiggles free: Despite four walks, the O's lefty was able to get out of some big spots on Monday night. What helped? A pair of double-play balls from Rajai Davis, who erased a leadoff walk in the third and ended the fifth, leaving the bases loaded.
"That's been our problem here for a while now," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "We're hitting into too many double plays, not getting good balls to handle in those situations."

Clutch Schoop: The O's second baseman broke the 1-1 tie with his three-run homer off of Smith, bringing his team lead in RBIs to 91. Schoop is having a career year and has consistently come through for Baltimore in the clutch.

REPLAY REVIEW
The A's lost their manager's challenge in the top of the eighth inning as Matt Olson was ruled out at second base. Olson, initially called out trying to stretch a single into a two-bagger, saw the call stand after a 2-minute, 12-second review.

A's: The A's will send rookie right-hander Paul Blackburn to the mound for Tuesday's 4:05 p.m. PT matchup with the Orioles at Camden Yards. Blackburn faced them in Oakland on Aug. 11, allowing four runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Orioles: The Orioles will send Ubaldo Jiménez to the mound on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. ET against the A's. The inconsistent righty took the loss in his last start in Seattle, allowing six earned runs over 4 1/3 innings.
