NEW YORK -- Manager Buck Showalter brought a thin bench into the Orioles' 2-1 loss in the series opener against the Yankees on Monday night, with Chris Davis battling an illness and Hyun Soo Kim nursing a right hamstring strain.
It could be getting thinner. Catcher Matt Wieters received X-rays on his right foot after the game, as he was hit by a 94-mph fastball from Iván Nova in the first inning. He stayed behind the plate for the entire game, but Showalter said he would've inserted a pinch-runner if his catcher had reached base again.
"[Wieters] was real sore," Showalter said. "A little anxiety about what it's going to show."
Wieters, a 2016 All-Star, is hitting .250 with nine homers. Caleb Joseph, a career .216 hitter, is listed behind him on the depth chart and has played in 27 games this season.
