O's stun Giants on Schoop's HR in 9th

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Orioles wouldn't go quietly on Sunday, rallying from a six-run deficit by scoring seven runs in the final three innings to defeat the San Francisco Giants, 8-7, at AT&T Park.
Matt Wieters went 5-for-5, but Jonathan Schoop highlighted the unrelenting comeback, blasting a two-out three-run home run into the left-field bleachers to give the Orioles the lead in the ninth. The homer off Giants closer Santiago Casilla came after Manny Machado reached via a base hit and Mark Trumbo drew a walk.
"I hit it good, but I saw Angel going back, going back, and then it went out," Schoop said. "I'm happy."

The win keeps the Orioles just a half-game behind the first-place Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East.

Their rally spoiled a breakout offensive performance by the Giants. Hitting with runners in scoring position has been a persisting problem for San Francisco in the second half, but the club was dominant in those situations on Sunday, getting RBI hits from Trevor Brown and Johnny Cueto, before taking a 7-1 lead with a four-run fifth inning. Brown, who replaced Buster Posey (back tightness) in the lineup, highlighted the performance by going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Hunter Pence took Posey's No. 4 spot and added a solo homer.

"All of that was great, but our bullpen, which has really done a terrific job, had a little hiccup," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "Those are always tough. It's a good club over there. They kept coming back. They have a dangerous lineup that can hurt you, and that's what happened today."
But the Giants' bullpen blew their 24th save of the season, and the club is now a Major League worst 9-18 since the All Star break. The Orioles' six-run comeback also served as the Giants' largest blown lead of the season. 
"The few mistakes they made, we took advantage," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "When you get a chance, you have to jump on it."

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Schoop's heroics: Schoop gave the Orioles an 8-7 lead with his 18th home run of the season, a three-run shot with two outs in the ninth. That completed an Orioles comeback from a 7-1 deficit. It was Schoop's first home run in the ninth inning in 2016 and his 12th game-winning hit. The Orioles are 40-9 when he homers.
"He loves contributing to our team," Showalter said. "Good things seem to follow him around. He gets out of the game what he puts into it."

Driving them in: The Giants entered the series finale batting just .201 with runners in scoring position in their last 15 games. But San Francisco found its timing at the plate when it mattered, getting RBI hits from Brown, Cueto, Brandon Belt and Joe Panik while building a 7-1 lead. The Giants went 6-for-13 with runners in scoring position in the first five innings, with Brown and Cueto combining for four of those hits.

Trumbo goes deep again: Mark Trumbo hit his Major League-leading 34th home run of the season in the eighth inning, sparking a two-run rally that made it 7-5. He's hit home runs in three of his last four games.
"It's the highs and lows of the game," Orioles closer Zach Britton said. "It was pretty frustrating where the score was, but I can't say it was unbelievable; especially with our offense. It was fun to watch."

Another blown lead: Casilla had held opponents scoreless in seven consecutive appearances before Sunday, but the right-hander left a hanging curveball out across the plate against Schoop in the ninth that ended the streak.
"I think I can still pitch better," said Casilla. "I know the type of pitcher I am. I just want to do the best I can."

Orioles: Following an off-day on Monday, Yovani Gallardo gets the start Tuesday night against the Boston Red Sox, beginning a stretch of 14 home games over the next 19 games for the Orioles. Gallardo is coming off one of his best starts of the season, even though he lost, 1-0.
Giants:Matt Moore will make his first start as a Giant at AT&T Park on Monday at 7:15 p.m. PT, as San Francisco opens a three-game series against the Pirates. Moore has a 3.00 ERA in two starts since being acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays.
