BALTIMORE -- The Orioles reinstated Matt Wieters from the paternity leave list prior to Monday's game, optioning Caleb Joseph to Triple-A Norfolk to clear a roster spot.
Wieters and his wife, Maria, welcomed their second son -- Michah -- on Friday night. He returned to the starting lineup for the O's series opener against the Nationals.
Joseph, 30, has batted .193/.240/.211 (22-for-114) with two doubles and six runs scored over 40 games with the Orioles this season. O's manager Buck Showalter said the plan is for him to get 10 days of at-bats and return with roster expansion in September.
Wieters has hit .240/.294/.381 (75-for-312) with 12 doubles, one triple, 10 home runs, and 45 RBIs over 91 games this season. The four-time All-Star ranks third in the American League with 43 RBIs as a catcher this season.
With Joseph in Triple-A, Wieters' backup for the time being is Francisco Peña, who came up when Wieters originally hit the paternity list.
