Margevicius deserved better in 2 of his 3 losses
After six Major League starts, left-handed rookie Nick Margevicius is 2-3 with a 3.23 earned run average -- and the Padres are 3-3 in games he has started.
Good numbers for a rookie.
But Margevicius deserved better in two of his three losses.
-- In his Major League debut, Margevicius held the Giants to one run on three hits and five strikeouts over five-plus innings. But he departed with the Padres trailing 1-0 in a game they eventually lost 3-2.
-- And on Monday night in Atlanta, the Braves scored three runs on four hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings against Margevicius. But only one of the runs was earned. The Padres lost that game 3-1.
After his first six starts, Margevicius has held the opposition to one earned run four times.
NOTEBOOK
-- SS/2B Greg Garcia had several costly misplays Monday night in Atlanta in his third start of the season. But he continued to be an offensive boost. He opened the game with a hit and later scored the Padres’ only run of the game in the first. In his last four games, Garcia is 3-for-8 with a home run, a sacrifice fly, three walks, two RBIs and three runs scored for a slash line of .375/.545/.750/1.295.
-- 1B Eric Hosmer has hit safely in four straight games and seven of his last eight games. During the surge, Hosmer has gone 12-for-31 with three doubles, three homers, two walks, eight RBIs and three runs scored for a slash line of .387/.424/.774/1.198.
-- LHP Robbie Erlin worked two scoreless innings Monday night, allowing two hits and a walk. The last time Erlin worked multiple scoreless innings was April 9 against the Giants. Two days later, he was optioned to Advanced Single-A Lake Elsinore when the Padres needed to add a spot starter (Pedro Avila) to the rotation.
-- CF Manuel Margot is 3-for-10 in his last three games with two RBIs.
