SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The Diamondbacks are bringing back a familiar face to try and bolster their bullpen as they agreed to terms with former closer Paul Sewald on a one-year, $1.5 million contract on Thursday.
The club has not confirmed the deal, which is pending a physical.
Sewald, 35, was acquired by the Diamondbacks at the Trade Deadline in 2023 and immediately assumed the closer's role for a team battling for a Wild Card spot. He saved 13 games for the Diamondbacks and his presence at the back end of games allowed other relievers like Kevin Ginkel and Ryan Thompson to settle into setup roles as Arizona went on to win the NL pennant before falling to the Rangers in the World Series.
The 2024 season wasn't as kind to Sewald, who suffered injuries that limited him to 42 games and the Diamondbacks elected not to re-sign him.
Sewald spent the 2025 season with the Guardians and Tigers, where injuries limited him to a combined 22 games.
The Diamondbacks bullpen struggled mightily in 2025 thanks in part to co-closers A.J. Puk and Justin Martinez undergoing Tommy John surgery.
Arizona has made several additions to its bullpen this offseason including signing free agents Taylor Clarke and Jonathan Loáisiga and trading for Kade Strowd.
