Much of the baseball world has gathered in Orlando for this week's Winter Meetings. Executives, managers, reporters, analysts -- they are all there. And soon, Pete Alonso will be, too.
Alonso will drive up from his residence in Tampa on Tuesday to hold in-person talks at the Meetings with interested suitors, a source told MLB.com's Anthony DiComo on Monday. That includes the Red Sox and the Orioles.
Alonso may just be the perfect offseason addition for a Boston team that wants a big bopper to fill the void left behind by Rafael Devers. The Orioles have been more often linked to some of the top starting pitchers in free agency, but they could use an infusion of power after a 2025 season in which their first basemen and designated hitters combined for a .375 slugging percentage (28th in MLB).
“We’re talking to a whole bunch of hitters, and we just view it as, ‘Do they improve the team? Do they improve the roster? Do they raise the ceiling of the team? Do they have an impact?’” O's president of baseball operations Mike Elias said. “If the player’s good enough, we can figure out ways to accommodate them. So we have a lot of conversations going on, mostly in free agency, but also some in trades, on guys that we view as impact bats.”
Baltimore is showing a willingness to spend, something it has had increased flexibility to do since private equity billionaire David Rubenstein and his group purchased the team in March 2024. The O’s haven’t emerged as big buyers yet, but that could soon change.
As for the only team Alonso has ever known, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns called re-signing the slugger "a priority" on Monday but indicated that they don't need to meet in person this week since they know each other so well, adding, "We'll be in touch." The two sides reportedly began contract talks last month.
The slugger, who turned 31 on Sunday, is coming off a strong 2025 season in which he hit .272 with 38 homers, 41 doubles and an .871 OPS, earning his first Silver Slugger Award and fifth All-Star selection.
