Stassi makes case as Phils spring to walk-off

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Phillies first baseman Brock Stassi is making his case to make the Opening Day roster.
He hit a walk-off single to center field in the ninth inning in Saturday afternoon's 6-5 victory over the Yankees in a Grapefruit League game at Spectrum Field. After Rhys Hoskins' one-out double to left field, pinch-runner Roman Quinn had no trouble scoring on the single from Stassi, who homered Friday against the Yankees.
"It's always good to get one of those," said Stassi, who is competing for a bench job. "I feel comfortable. I feel good at the plate right now. It's really all you can ask for, having some success early. But I've got to keep it rolling."

Maikel Franco also had a big day for the Phils as he homered twice, his second an inside-the-park home run as the ball deflected off Yanks center fielder Tyler Wade's glove and rolled underneath the fence. Hoskins followed the insider-the-parker with a solo shot of his own.

The Yankees took advantage of some Phillies miscues to take an early lead. Gleyber Torres doubled, advanced to third and scored on a wild pitch in the third. Miguel Andújar and Torres both scored on a Mark Appel wild pitch in the fifth.

Yankees right-hander Adam Warren got the start, striking out two in two perfect innings as he mounts a challenge for one of the team's vacant rotation slots. Warren said he is aware that his past success in the bullpen could hurt his chances.
"I talked to [pitching coach] Larry [Rothschild] about that the other day," Warren said. "He's like, 'It's probably going to hurt you that you're good out of the bullpen and you're flexible, too.' I said, 'I know.' But I just want to go out there, and maybe I can pitch good enough to make them put me in the rotation."
Yankees Up Next: The Yankees will host the Blue Jays on Sunday at George M. Steinbrenner Field, facing off in a 1:05 p.m. ET contest that will be shown on MLB.TV. Right-hander Luis Severino draws the start for New York, looking to begin his rotation candidacy on a positive note. Brett Oberholtzer will start for Toronto.
Phillies Up Next: The Phillies take the short trip to Dunedin, Fla., where they play the Blue Jays at 1:07 p.m. ET Sunday. This game will also be shown on MLB.TV. Right-hander Jeremy Hellickson gets the start. He is expected to be the Phillies' Opening Day starter, although manager Pete Mackanin said he did not want to make it official yet.
