Phillies place All-Star lefty Luzardo on IL

The Phillies placed left-hander Jesús Luzardo on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday as the first-time All-Star deals with inflammation in his left shoulder.
The IL stint can be backdated three days to Saturday, which means Luzardo would not be eligible to return until the final day of the regular season. Manager Don Mattingly did not rule out Luzardo making a postseason start, and Luzardo told reporters in Washington that he will be ready for the playoffs.
In a rotation headlined by Cristopher Sánchez and Zack Wheeler, the 28-year-old Luzardo has been the Phillies’ most reliable pitcher for the better part of the past three months. His 1.66 ERA in 12 starts since July 1 is the lowest among qualified starting pitchers in that span, and he also won NL Pitcher of the Month honors in August.
On the year, Luzardo is 14-5 with a 2.87 ERA in 29 starts, recording 221 strikeouts in 178 2/3 innings. His last outing was the finest of his young career: A two-hit shutout against the first-place Braves on Labor Day at Citizens Bank Park.

Now, the Phillies will navigate the final 12 games of the regular season without Luzardo. The club entered the day in the second NL Wild Card spot and 4 1/2 games behind the Braves in the NL East.
Luzardo has been remarkably durable since the Phillies acquired him from the Marlins in a Dec. 2024 trade. He has made 61 starts since the beginning of the 2025 season, more than all but six pitchers in baseball in that span.
In a corresponding move, Philadelphia recalled right-hander Grant Holman from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
