Phillies raise funds for ALS patient care, research on Lou Gehrig Day

Thanks to the support of Phillies fans and the generosity of Asplundh, more than $710,000 was raised during the team’s ALS Awareness Night, held during this evening’s game against the San Diego Padres at Citizens Bank Park. This amount includes an on-field donation of $415,000 (and growing) made by the event’s presenting sponsor, Asplundh, in honor of its former Chairman of the Board/CEO Scott Asplundh, who passed away in January due to complications from ALS. Monies raised will benefit ALS United Mid-Atlantic and go toward research, care and services for ALS patients.

More than $24.5 million has been raised for the cause since the club’s relationship with ALS United Mid-Atlantic began in 1984. The ballpark-wide event, held on MLB’s Lou Gehrig Day, was a continuation of the Phillies’ efforts to make a difference for those battling this fatal disease.

“Tonight is about standing with the courageous individuals and families impacted by ALS and reinforcing that they are not alone,” said Phillies Chief Revenue Officer Jackie Cuddeback. “We’re incredibly grateful to Phillies fans and to Asplundh, our amazing partner, for their continued commitment as we work together to advance awareness and support the search for a cure.”

The night included an “ALS Lineup of Courage,” with those battling and affected by ALS lined up on the field alongside Phillies players during the national anthem, including local ALS United Mid-Atlantic patients, as well as longtime Asplundh employee Scotty Easter, who is among 39 members of his family diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Fundraising included grab bags sponsored by Hatfield Quality Meats with autographed items and a special Theme Night ticket. The club is also hosting the Phantastic Auction, with part of the proceeds benefitting the cause.

“We are extremely thankful to the Phillies, Asplundh, and the thousands of fans who came together tonight to support families affected by ALS,” said Tony Heyl, Executive Director, ALS United Mid-Atlantic. “Their compassion and generosity help provide critical care, advance research, and remind those living with ALS that they are not alone. Nights like this give our community hope and strength as we continue the fight for a cure.”
