Luzardo named to NL roster, giving Phillies MLB-high 6 All-Stars

KANSAS CITY -- Brandon Marsh has enjoyed one of the Phillies’ finest breakout seasons in recent memory.

Jhoan Duran has been one of baseball’s best closers since he joined the team last summer.

The baseball world has noticed.

Marsh and Duran will be two of six Phillies at this year’s All-Star Game on July 14 at Citizens Bank Park. Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, Cristopher Sánchez and Jesús Luzardo are the others, giving the Phillies an All-Star-high six players. It will be the first All-Star Game for Marsh, Duran and Luzardo, who was named to the roster on Tuesday. Marsh is the first Phillies outfielder to win a fan-elected starting spot since Raul Ibañez in 2009. He got more votes than any of the six NL outfielders that reached the second round of voting.

“I think that first one is always special,” Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly said Saturday at Kauffman Stadium. “I just think that first one validates, ‘I’ve made it. I’m an All-Star.’ It’s just huge.”

Duran finished second in player voting for NL relievers.

“It’s a dream come true,” Duran said. “I’ve always wanted to be there. It happened this year. I’m always preparing in the offseason to be the best I can. Sometimes that doesn’t happen. Sometimes I’m better in the second half. This year I had a really good first half. I’m proud about what I did.”

Luzardo got a nod alongside Pittsburgh’s Braxton Ashcraft and St. Louis’ Riley O’Brien. They replaced Jacob Misiorowski, Max Meyer and Paul Skenes on the roster.

“It’s obviously an honor,” Luzardo said. “The first one of my career. It’s been a good year as a team to fight back from a bad start, so it's just a good note, but something to continue to build on.”

Schwarber and Sánchez, like Duran, earned spots by getting enough player votes. Harper made the squad via MLB Commissioner Rob Mandred’s “Legend Pick.”

“I think the longevity side of it -- Harp,” Mattingly said. “I mean, it's building, right where you start getting those guys that get 12, 15 [All-Star appearances], whatever it is when they play a long time. I think just the fact that he’s still continuing to play at that level, it's huge.”

Marsh is batting .305 with 15 home runs, 46 RBIs and an .844 OPS. Schwarber leads MLB with 30 home runs, while his .561 slugging percentage ranks second in the National League. He is fourth in baseball with a .930 OPS.

Harper has 20 home runs and an .894 OPS, which is seventh in baseball.

Sánchez is 10-4 with a 2.62 ERA. He had a 50 2/3-innings scoreless streak earlier this season. It is the fifth-longest single-season streak since 1983.

The only questions now are will Sánchez start the game for the NL? And will Schwarber and Harper participate in the Home Run Derby on July 13?

Jhoan Duran, RHP

• Previous All-Star appearances: none
• Something to know: Duran was a sensation with the Twins, but he carried his Durantula experience to Philly with tremendous results. He had saved 21 games in 22 opportunities when he made his first All-Star team on July 4. That 95.5 percent save percentage would the second-best in franchise history, behind only Brad Lidge’s 41-for-41 season in 2008.

Bryce Harper, 1B

• Previous All-Star appearances: 8 (2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022, 2024)
• Something to know: Harper is one of only a handful of players not to make an All-Star team, then win his league’s MVP Award in the same year. Harper missed the 2021 NL All-Star Game, but had a monstrous second half to win his second MVP, finishing ahead of Juan Soto and Fernando Tatis Jr. Other All-Star-snubs-to-MVPs in the same season: Jimmy Rollins in 2007.

Jesús Luzardo, LHP

• Previous All-Star appearances: none
• Something to know: What a year for Luzardo. He got married in the offseason, he signed a five-year, $135 million contract extension in March and he learned this week he made his first All-Star team. “It’s been a great time for me and my family,” Luzardo said.

Brandon Marsh, LF

• Previous All-Star appearances: none
• Something to know: The Phillies acquired Marsh on Aug. 2, 2022, for catching prospect Logan O’Hoppe. Marsh had an .870 OPS on July 4, when he learned he made his first All-Star team. The Phillies have not had a higher OPS by a primary outfielder at the break since Jayson Werth (.881 OPS) in 2010.

Cristopher Sánchez, LHP

• Previous All-Star appearances: 1 (2024)
• Something to know: From late April through early June, Sánchez had a 50 2/3-innings scoreless streak. It is the fifth-longest, single-season scoreless streak since 1893. Sánchez earned NL Pitcher of the Month honors in June for his efforts.

Kyle Schwarber, DH

• Previous All-Start appearances: 3 (2021, 2022, 2025)
• Something to know: Schwarber won the 2025 All-Star MVP Award when he went 3-for-3 in a home run swing-off in Atlanta. Johnny Callison is the only other Phillies player to win an All-Star MVP. He did it in 1964. Callison hit a three-run, walk-off home run.
