Pirates call up Hanson, K. Marte for depth

CHICAGO -- About 30 minutes before first pitch at Wrigley Field on Tuesday night, the Pirates made a series of roster moves to deepen their bench and bullpen.
The Pirates recalled infielder Alen Hanson and selected the contract of left-hander Kelvin Marte from Triple-A Indianapolis. To make room on the active roster, Pittsburgh optioned starters Jameson Taillon and Steven Brault to Rookie-level Bristol, a paper move so they can return Friday.
In order to add Marte on their 40-man roster, the Pirates designated left-hander Kyle Lobstein for assignment.
This is Hanson's second callup this season, as he joined the team for three games in May while Starling Marte was on the paternity list. In 110 Triple-A games this season, Hanson hit .266/.318/.389 with 36 steals while playing second base, third base and left field.
Marte, 28, has never pitched in the Majors. The lefty put together a 3.29 ERA in 30 relief appearances for Indianapolis. He was recently moved to the Triple-A rotation, and he's gone 2-1 with a 1.69 ERA in 16 innings over three starts.
Taillon and Brault, like utility man Adam Frazier, can return to the Pirates on Friday after Bristol's season ends. Neither will miss a turn in the rotation.
Lobstein, 27, posted a 3.96 ERA in 14 relief appearances for the Pirates this season. He was 1-3 with a 4.11 ERA in 19 games for Indianapolis.
Nova deal complete
Shortly before the Aug. 1 non-waiver Trade Deadline, the Pirates acquired Iván Nova from the Yankees in exchange for two players to be named. They completed the deal Tuesday by sending Stephen Tarpley, who was Pittsburgh's No. 17 prospect according to MLBPipeline.com, and Tito Polo, the club's No. 27 prospect, to New York.
Both were playing for Class A Advanced Bradenton. Tarpley was 6-4 with a 4.32 ERA in 100 innings over 20 starts. Polo is enjoying a breakout season, batting .289/.360/.451 with 16 homers and 37 steals between Class A West Virginia and Bradenton.
Two top 30 prospects might be a hefty price for two months of a starting pitcher, but Nova has been worth it so far. The right-hander is 4-0 with a 2.87 ERA, a complete game, 22 strikeouts and one walk in five starts for Pittsburgh. He will become a free agent after the season.
Trainer's room
• Nova (left hamstring discomfort) is on track to make his next scheduled turn in the rotation, head athletic trainer Todd Tomczyk said Tuesday.
• Jung Ho Kang (left shoulder subluxation) is working out in Indianapolis and nearing a return to game action.
• Catcher Chris Stewart (left knee) will play one more rehab game for Double-A Altoona then likely rejoin the Pirates after rosters expand Thursday.
Minor matters
• Right-hander Mitch Keller, the Pirates' No. 5 prospect, was promoted to Bradenton and named the South Atlantic League's Most Outstanding Pitcher on Tuesday. Keller went 8-5 with a 2.46 ERA in 23 starts for West Virginia this season.
• Pirates first baseman Josh Bell was selected to the Triple-A International League Postseason All-Star Team.
