Giants and Padres Complete Trade

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres completed a trade today with RHP Miguel Mendez and IF Joniel Hernandez joining the Giants in exchange for LHP Robbie Ray.

Mendez, 24, was San Diego’s fourth-ranked prospect according to MLB.com. He has pitched 11 games for Double-A San Antonio and one game for High-A Fort Wayne this season, totaling a 2-2 record with a 4.79 ERA (19er, 35.2ip), 39 strikeouts and a 1.40 WHIP in 12 games this season.

A native of San Juan de la Maguana, DR, Mendez signed with San Diego as an International free agent on February 5, 2021. He has a career 16-20 record with a 4.52 ERA (165er, 328.2ip), 368 strikeouts and a 1.41 WHIP in 101 games (79 starts). He was named a Midwest League Post-Season All-Star in 2025 and was also a Midwest League Pitcher of the Month in July of last year and a California League Pitcher of the Month in July of 2024.

Hernandez, 17, was San Diego’s ninth-ranked prospect per MLB.com. He was named a DSL Mid-Season All-Star this year, his first in affiliated ball. Hernandez was batting .303 (47x155) with 38 runs, 15 doubles, two triples, four home runs, 43 RBI and a .927 OPS in 41 games for DSL Padres Gold.

The Havana, CU, native signed with the Padres in January of this year after being ranked as the No. 13 overall international amateur prospect per MLB.com.

Ray, a 2025 All-Star with the Giants, was 10-6 with a 3.08 ERA (42er, 122.2ip), 107 strikeouts and a 1.29 WHIP over 22 games (21 starts) this season. In three seasons with the Giants (2024-2026), Ray went 24-16 with a 3.54 ERA (132er, 335.2ip), 336 strikeouts and a 1.23 WHIP in 61 games (60 starts).
