Projecting Phillies' lineup with Realmuto

The Phillies acquired J.T. Realmuto on Thursday, sending a package including three players -- Sixto Sanchez, Jorge Alfaro and Will Stewart -- and $250,000 in international slot value to the Marlins in exchange for adding perhaps the best catcher in baseball to the middle of a revamped Philly lineup.
Realmuto joins Andrew McCutchen and Jean Segura as the prizes of Philadelphia's offseason position-player group, as it is clearly focused on improving a tepid offense from a year ago. And what could the new-look Phillies lineup look like with Realmuto in the mix?

Now imagine that lineup with either Bryce Harper or Manny Machado inserted in the middle.

After finishing with the fourth-worst offense in the National League last season with a wRC+ mark of 91, this Phillies lineup could give opposing pitchers nightmares next season.

Even if the Phillies don't add more talent, this lineup should improve drastically by trading for Realmuto, 27, who is coming off the best season of his career. He made the NL All-Star team and batted .277/.340/.484 with a 131 OPS+ and 21 home runs. When you combine his proficiency behind the plate as a game-caller and pitch-framer, the Phillies feel as if they got a major upgrade, even if they were high on Alfaro.

"I think J.T. Realmuto is the best catcher in baseball," general manager Matt Klentak said. "I think the upgrade is pretty significant. It's hard to acquire top players at any position, especially at the catcher position."
There is also evidence to suggest Realmuto could get better playing his home games in a new ballpark, after drastic career splits at home at Marlins Park (.245/.294/.384) against his career slash line on the road (.309/.356/.492). Klentak also said he believes playing half his home games at hitter-friendly Citizens Bank Park will be helpful for Realmuto.

Now aside from Herrera, the Phillies' projected starting lineup is right-handed heavy, so perhaps the team could use a left-handed power bat to complement the righties. But Realmuto adds an impact offensive talent to the middle of the Phillies' order, setting the Phils up nicely in an NL East that is shaping up to be among the most competitive divisions in baseball.

"I think we've improved pretty significantly," Klentak said. "Having said that, the teams in our division have also gotten better. So, we need to continue to look for opportunities to improve our team. They may happen before Opening Day, they may happen at the [non-waiver] Trade Deadline, who knows, but we always have to be looking for opportunities to improve our club."
