The White Sox finalized a one-year, $1.25 million MLB contract with veteran free-agent outfielder Randal Grichuk before Monday night's game against the Angels. In corresponding moves, the club placed outfielder Austin Hays on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to Saturday) with a left calf strain and transferred infielder/outfielder Tanner Murray to the 60-day IL.
The news comes several days after Grichuk, 34, was designated for assignment by the Yankees. That move was a surprise, as Grichuk signed with New York late in Spring Training and won an Opening Day roster spot as a bench outfielder. Grichuk batted .194 (6-for-31) with four doubles and two RBIs in 16 games with the Yankees.
“It was a difficult decision, just because I feel like Randal came in here and fit in really well,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said at the time. “Despite numbers-wise a slow start, I feel like he’s shown us the at-bats we wanted to see from him when he got his opportunities against left-handed pitching.”
The White Sox are the eighth team for Grichuk, a veteran of 13 MLB seasons who, in addition to his time with the Yankees, has played for the Cardinals, Blue Jays, Rockies, Angels, D-backs and Royals. He has a career slash line of .250/.297/.464 along with 212 homers.
