Rangers sign Cuban infielder La O

ARLINGTON -- The Rangers have signed Cuban infielder Luis Y. La O to a Minor League contract, according to MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez.
The Rangers have not confirmed or announced the signing. Sanchez reported that La O will receive a $110,000 signing bonus.
La O is primarily a third baseman, but he has played both second and shortstop. He played six seasons for Santiago de Cuba in Serie Nacional, hitting .329 with nine home runs and 143 RBIs in 347 games.

La O batted .327 with two home runs and 39 RBIs in 76 games for Santiago and Matanzas during the 2014-15 season. The infielder was a key player for Cuba's 2015 Caribbean Series championship team in Puerto Rico, picking up seven hits in 16 at-bats with two runs and one RBI in four games.
He is considered an outstanding defensive player who won a gold glove award in Cuba for his fielding. Offensively, he has speed and the ability to make contact with low strikeout totals, but the biggest concern is his lack of power, especially if he plays third base.
La O defected from Cuba in 2015, and he was declared eligible to sign a year ago.
