Pitching, power help Rangers corral Yankees

NEW YORK -- Rangers rookie right-hander Austin Bibens-Dirkx held the Yankees to one run in seven innings and was backed by home runs from Carlos Gómez and Robinson Chirinos in an 8-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.
Aaron Judge's 26th home run provided the only run for the Yankees, as starter Luis Cessa took the loss. Cessa allowed three runs in five innings while continuing to fill in for injured left-hander CC Sabathia. The Yankees, despite winning the series opener on Friday, have lost nine of their last 11 games.
Bibens-Dirkx has been filling in for multiple injured starters on the Rangers' staff, but has been making a case for a more permanent role. He is now 2-0 with a 3.80 ERA in four starts and 3-0 with a 3.68 ERA since being called up to the big leagues on May 7 for the first time in his 12-year professional career.

"I'm just enjoying this and trying to have fun," Bibens-Dirkx said. "I got to pitch at Yankee Stadium and it was awesome. I had a good outing, that was awesome, too. I'm just enjoying every moment."
The Rangers scored in the first, as Delino DeShields led off with a walk, stole second and scored on a single by Elvis Andrus. Gomez made it 3-0 in the fourth with his 10th home run and Chirinos added his 10th in the seventh. The Rangers -- who broke the game open with four runs in the ninth, including a two-run double by Shin-Soo Choo -- have won 11 of their last 17 games.

The Yankees had only three baserunners reach second base, and those came on Judge's homer and two Mason Williams stolen bases.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Gomez stays hot: Gomez has been on a power surge since returning from the disabled list and continued it with a two-run home run in the fourth inning off of Cessa. Gomez has six home runs in eight games since being activated. Prior to being on the DL from May 15 to June 16, he had four home runs in his first 38 games. Gomez also manufactured a run in the ninth when he led off with a walk, stole second, went to third on Mike Napoli's fly ball and scored on a wild pitch.

"He has been very impressive," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. "He is back to the mode of looking for the ball up and driving it. It has been very effective."
Here comes the Judge: Judge got the Yankees on the board in the sixth with his shot. He leads the Majors in home runs and also has a 26-game on-base streak. He has eight home runs in his last 14 games.

Judge's home run was his 26th in 256 at-bats. That's a rate of one home run per 9.8 at-bats, the highest in the American League among qualifying hitters. But Chirinos has 10 home runs in 95 at-bats. That's not enough to be listed among the qualifiers, but it is a home run for every 9.5 at-bats.
BELTRE CONTINUES CLIMB TO 3,000
Adrián Beltré had a single and a double on Saturday, leaving him with 2,964 hits in his career. He is currently 32nd all-time, with Sam Rice next on the list at No. 31 with 2,985 hits. After that, it's Roberto Clemente with an even 3,000 hits.

Rangers: Right-hander Nick Martinez pitches against the Yankees at 1:05 p.m. CT on Sunday in the Bronx. Martinez is 2-1 with a 3.60 ERA in his last five starts and one relief appearance. He is 1-3 with a 5.27 ERA in five starts on the road.
Yankees: Righty Michael Pineda takes the mound against the Rangers at 2:05 p.m. ET at Yankee Stadium, following the Yankees' Old Timers' Day ceremony. Pineda is 0-3 with a 4.35 in five career starts against Texas.
