Gomez's HR-saving grab turns into footnote

NEW YORK -- Austin Pruitt didn't think the ball was going out. Rays manager Kevin Cash didn't, either.
Pruitt and Cash were right, but only because of a great play by Rays right fielder Carlos Gómez. In the sixth inning Tuesday, with the score tied, Gomez went to the fence, leaped and robbed Yankees second baseman Tyler Wade of a home run.
"That was pretty awesome," said Pruitt, who threw the pitch to Wade.

The Rays would go on to lose the game, 11-4, but at the time the Gomez play was crucial. The Rays had just tied it at 4 on Denard Span's two-run pinch-hit double in the top of the sixth. Wade was batting with two out and nobody on.

He didn't get all of Pruitt's first-pitch fastball, but this is right field in Yankee Stadium. You don't have to get all of it. When a ball is hit in the air to right field here, you usually think one thing.
"Homer," said Cash.
But Gomez had other thoughts. He saw the wall and he saw his chance.
"I timed my leap perfectly," he said. "Those fly balls, you get time to think."
He had time to get to the wall and time to leap. And when he came down with the ball, the game was still tied.
