Smyly wins arbitration hearing, to earn $3.75M

ST. PETERSBURG -- Drew Smyly won in arbitration on Thursday, when a decision came down that the Rays left-hander will make $3.75 million for the 2016 season rather than the $3.2 million salary the team submitted.
In the process, Smyly claimed a raise of $1.1 million after being paid $2.65 million in 2015.

Smyly made just 12 starts during the 2015 season due to a left shoulder injury. He began the season on the disabled list with shoulder tendinitis, returned April 24, made three starts, then returned to the DL with left shoulder soreness on May 9. He returned on Aug. 16 and made nine more starts, finishing the season with a 5-2 record and a 3.11 ERA.
Since being acquired by the Rays from the Tigers at the 2014 non-waiver Trade Deadline in the deal that sent David Price to Detroit, Smyly has gone 8-3 with a 2.52 ERA in 19 starts.
The Rays are 6-1 in arbitration hearings under the current management.
