Odorizzi to DL with lower back strain

ST. PETERSBURG -- The Rays have placed Jake Odorizzi on the 10-day disabled list with a lower back strain.
Right-hander Andrew Kittredge has been recalled from Triple-A Durham to take Odorizzi's spot on the 25-man roster. The Rays have not announced who will take his spot in the rotation during his absence. Odorizzi was scheduled to start Friday in New York against the Yankees.
Odorizzi, who last pitched on July 23, is 6-4 with a 4.47 ERA in 18 starts this season.
"It's been something I've been dealing with, managing, pitching through all season," Odorizzi said. "So I just have to get back to the point of being 100 percent healthy and be ready to go for the last two months.
"It's been there. We've been managing it. Been dealing with it. Doing treatment for it. It's more restricting than anything else, so it's going to be time to let it sit and be healthy."
Odorizzi said he'd likely miss two starts.
"Then I'll be good to go," Odorizzi said. "I just need to let it cool down and get back to being normal and being able to finish pitches. Because that's the problem, because it's restricting me from finishing pitches and getting completely through the ball. That's kind of been the thing all year. A little more up in the zone, just because [I] can't get through it.
"I could throw this Friday if I really needed to. So we thought it was best to get it looked at, taken care of and just rest and strengthen. So it's nothing serious. I just have to let it run its course, calm down and let the muscles kind of relax in that area."
Odorizzi said the pain is located on his left side. He had an MRI and noted, "There's no structural damage or anything along those lines."
"It's just a little strain," Odorizzi said. "It's something I've been going through. It's not that big of an issue. I've been able to compete [with it]. ... It will be nice to be back to 100 percent and feel good."
This will be Kittredge's second stint with the Rays this season. Kittredge made three appearances his first time around and has a 3.86 ERA. The 27-year-old has made 30 appearances (two starts) for Durham this season and has a 1.90 ERA over 52 innings.
