We've never seen this much Top 100 prospect talent on Opening Day before

If it feels like more top prospects than ever are making Opening Day rosters, your eyes are not deceiving you.

It's true: The 2026 season has begun with more Top 100 prospects in the big leagues than any season since MLB Pipeline released its first Top 100 in 2012.

In all, 20 such prospects are on Opening Day rosters, which is nearly double the average (11) from the past 15 seasons. In fact, 2021 was the only other season (19) with more than 15.

And these truly are some of the best young players in the sport. Among those to start the year in the Majors are Tigers infielder Kevin McGonigle (MLB No. 2), Cardinals infielder JJ Wetherholt (MLB No. 5), Mets right-hander Nolan McLean (MLB No. 6), Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo (MLB No. 8), Pirates right-hander Bubba Chandler (MLB No. 11), Mets outfielder Carson Benge (MLB No. 16) and Royals catcher Carter Jensen (MLB No. 18).

You can see four of baseball's top 10 prospects in the Majors off the bat, along with seven of the top 20 and 11 of the Top 50. There haven't been higher totals in more than two decades, dating back to a loaded 2006 season. And those 2026 numbers don't even count postseason hero Trey Yesavage (MLB No. 12), who will begin the season for the Blue Jays on the injured list.

Interestingly, there aren't a tremendous number of ranked prospects on Opening Day rosters -- just 35, the lowest since at least 2016. But when teams are turning to rookies, they're opting for their best young players. Nearly two-thirds of the ranked prospects on Opening Day rosters also appear on the Top 100.

Part of the reason for the uptick is that several players were on the verge of graduating last year but held their prospect status over the offseason. McLean, Basallo and Orioles outfielder Dylan Beavers (MLB No. 69) were each fewer than five days from graduation, while Guardians left-hander Parker Messick (MLB No. 95), Reds right-hander Rhett Lowder (MLB No. 86), Rays shortstop Carson Williams (MLB No. 63) and Chandler were each fewer than 10 days away.

This many prospects starting the year in the big leagues also raises the possibility of a Prospect Promotion Incentive pick being awarded to a team. Prospects who appear on a Top 100 from at least two of Baseball America, ESPN and MLB Pipeline can earn their teams a Draft pick after the first round if they earn a full year of MLB service (172 days) and go on to win Rookie of the Year honors.

There are a few caveats that prevent rookie-eligible players from earning a PPI pick. Players who have accrued more than 60 days of service time because of time on the injured list -- such as Lowder -- are not eligible, and Pirates left-hander Hunter Barco is not eligible since he did not appear on Baseball America or ESPN's Top 100. However, Yesavage can earn the Blue Jays a PPI pick since he's beginning the season on the Major League IL.

It's clear that teams are responding to incentives, though, with 19 PPI-eligible players to start the season the highest mark in recent years. Five prospects from the Top 100 -- McGonigle, Wetherholt, Benge, Phillies right-hander Andrew Painter (MLB No. 28) and Phillies outfielder Justin Crawford (MLB No. 53) will be making their respective MLB debuts. Plus Guardians outfielder Chase DeLauter (MLB No. 46) saw his first big league action during the playoffs last year.
