Herrera resumes throwing, but limited to DH

GOODYEAR, Ariz. - Dilson Herrera played in his eighth game of the spring for the Reds on Wednesday against the Angels. The one common factor in all of his games is that he was once again the designated hitter, and has yet to get a start at second base.
Herrera was held back from throwing early in camp because of right shoulder soreness. He has since resumed a throwing program, but playing defense in a game is not currently planned.
"It'll probably still be a little while, I would imagine. I couldn't even put a timetable on it," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "Until I can see him throwing the ball instead of having a throwing progression -- having him over at second base throwing to first base -- then it's not even part of the discussion."

Herrera was acquired from the Mets in an Aug. 1 trade for Jay Bruce. Price felt there was still enough time to see him at second base this spring, but ruled out trying him in other positions during camp.

"We're on the eighth today. If two more weeks go by and he's not in games, that's not a lot of time to evaluate," Price said.
Worth noting
• Price moved right fielder Scott Schebler in center field Wednesday and had second baseman José Peraza start at shortstop.
"I'll keep [third baseman Eugenio] Suarez at short for a couple of games just to keep him acclimated over there," Price said. "Schebler has played plenty of center field and Peraza has at short, so this isn't anything more than keeping them fresh with those positions."
• Price has not shortened his list of potential starting pitcher candidates for the final two rotation spots, which means several contenders still must work in relief during games until there aren't enough innings to go around.
"It doesn't mean a whole lot if you start the game or come in second as long as you get the innings, and the innings that you pitch are effective," Price said.
• First baseman/outfielder Christian Walker, who was claimed off waivers Monday, arrived in camp Wednesday. Walker took ground balls at first base during batting practice. He can also play left field, which he learned in recent seasons.
Walker, who will be vying for a bench spot, had just joined the Braves from the Orioles a couple of weeks ago. Now he is going through the introduction process again.
"It's been hectic for sure. But it definitely feels good to be here. I'm more settled in here with a locker, and I'm meeting all the guys," Walker said. "I feel like there's always an opportunity. You have to approach it that way. I'm not going to change anything about how I play or myself, and hopefully, there is a spot for me."
• Price plans to continue using the DH in games for at least another week, unless another National League club is the home team and requests the pitcher hits. The Reds plan to have their pitchers hit in Minor League games, and they are all taking extra batting practice.
