Cano, Story make history with early power displays

Mariners veteran Robinson Cano and Rockies rookie Trevor Story have combined to light up scoreboards with some historic power hitting in the opening week of the season.
On Wednesday, Cano homered twice as the Mariners rallied for a 9-5 victory at Texas, while Story went deep off the D-backs' Patrick Corbin during a 4-3 win in Phoenix. Both now have four homers in 2016, making this the first season in which two players have done that within their teams' first three games.

Previously, only nine players since at least 1913 had homered four or more times in the opening three games, according to baseball-reference.com. Adrian Gonzalez racked up five for the Dodgers last year, while eight others have collected four: Vernon Wells (2010 Blue Jays), Chris Shelton ('06 Tigers), Barry Bonds ('02 Giants), Frank Howard (1969 Senators), Eddie Mathews ('58 Braves), Carl Furillo ('55 Dodgers), Bobby Doerr ('41 Red Sox) and Dolph Camilli ('35 Phillies).
Both Cano and Story have left the yard at least once in each game so far. Story did it twice in his Major League debut on Monday at Chase Field, while Cano matched that on Wednesday with a pair of two-run blasts at Globe Life Park.

In 2015, Cano didn't hit his fourth home run until June 26, in the Mariners' 74th game and his 71st. Story, meanwhile, was playing for the Double-A New Britain Rock Cats at the beginning of last season, before earning a promotion to Triple-A Albuquerque at the end of June.
