Rockies visit new Texas ballpark to open season

DENVER -- The Rockies will open the 60-game 2020 season at Texas on July 24 – and announced they will play exhibition games against the Rangers on July 21 and 22.

The games will be the first at new Globe Life Field in Arlington. After the season-opening three-game series at Texas from July 24-26 and a two-gamer at Oakland from July 28-29, the Coors Field opener will be July 31 against the Padres.

Here is the Rockies’ 2020 regular season schedule

The Rockies were processing the information as of Monday afternoon. Second baseman Ryan McMahon was heading for a Zoom call with media when the slate was announced. All he could do was smile about the fact there was a schedule.

“It’s definitely nice to get a schedule,” McMahon said. “It definitely makes the season more real. It makes it exciting, man.

“We’re a lot closer than a lot of people realize.”

AT&T SportsNet will televise all 60 Rockies games, and the Aug. 31 contest against the Padres also will be carried by ESPN. The MLB season will begin with fans not allowed to attend.

In their official announcement, the Rockies said their “hope is to allow a limited number of fans to attend 2020 home games at Coors Field, and to that end, we have been working with city and state health officials, as well as Major League Baseball, to finalize a plan that adheres to strict health protocols and ensures fan safety.”

The abbreviated schedule will consist of 40 games against National League West opponents, with Interleague games against the AL West. The Rockies will play host to the D-backs three times, the Dodgers four times, the Padres seven times and Giants six times.

The Rockies’ slate ends with seven straight road games -- four at San Francisco (Sept. 21-24) and three at Arizona (Sept. 25-27).
