Rockies announce 2026 player development staff
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Rockies’ Minor League managers and coaching staff were released to the public this week. There was a reason the hiring process extended into the start of Major League workouts.
“A reason it has taken a while is because we actually have our Major League coaches involved in that process, because we’re really trying to build a comprehensive program -- from the big leagues all the way through the Dominican [Summer League, the level of the youngest signees] that’s really tied together,” Rockies president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta said.
The Rockies ended up with one of the Majors’ youngest teams last year, and have trended young during much of their club-record seven straight losing seasons. Often, there was little depth in the Majors and many players -- prospects or not -- were promoted to fill holes. This deprived them of developmental time in the Minors.
If the team is to correct that issue, it needs to establish benchmarks and a process for promoting players and making sure all managers, coaches and coordinators have a clear idea of what the player needs. The Major League staff, the plan was, should know and communicate with coaches along the line.
“That will actually go a long way toward helping in terms of the development process,” DePodesta said. “Whenever a player moves levels and there’s a handoff, there’s a chance that something gets lost in the translation. We want to minimize those handoffs by having a very cohesive unit.”
