Rockies' duo flashes Futures Game leather

MIAMI -- Both members of the Rockies showed off their skills defensively during the 7-6 victory by the U.S. team in Sunday's SiriusXM Future's Game as Brendan Rodgers and Ryan McMahon both made two of the game's most impressive plays at Marlins Park.
In the third inning, Rodgers snagged a hard grounder at second base for an impressive out. And in the ninth, McMahon extended over the railing in the home dugout to catch a foul popup that nearly had him topple into the dugout. McMahon followed it up at first base by jumping to save an errant throw and making a tag play for the last out of the game to seal the U.S. team's win.
"It's kind of cool right?" McMahon said about both Rockies flashing the leather.

With hard-throwing White Sox right-hander Michael Kopech, the No.11 prospect in MLB, on the mound in the third inning, Josh Naylor roped a hard grounder toward second base. The ball came out of Kopech's hand at 100 mph and off Naylor's bat near 108 mph, and although he did not have much time, it was enough for Rodgers to make a slick backhand play at second base.
"I was going to get in front of it, but I really had no chance," said Rodgers, the Rockies' top prospect and 10th-ranked prospect in baseball as rated by MLB Pipeline. "I didn't have much time to react to that one."
Rodgers was selected as a shortstop, but has been learning second base in an effort to become more versatile. He admits he is not totally comfortable there yet, but he sure looked the part on Sunday.
"He's got nasty hands," McMahon said.
Not to be outdone, McMahon made his own spectacular play in the ninth inning to rob Vlad Guerrero Jr. on a foul ball near the home dugout. He extended over the railing, with his feet leaving the ground and nearly falling into the dugout to make the play.
"I don't know, I blacked out." McMahon -- the Rockies' No. 4 prospect said. "I was chasing the ball and next thing I knew I was over the railing, catching it."
Rodgers watched from the dugout in awe.
"I thought he had no chance on that ball," he said.
