Rox exercise caution, place Desmond on DL

DENVER -- Before Monday's 5-3 win over the Reds, the Rockies placed Ian Desmond on the 10-day disabled list with a right calf strain. He sustained the injury Sunday while making a catch on a fly ball off the bat of D-backs second baseman Brandon Drury in the series finale.
Colorado activated outfielder Carlos González from the disabled list in a corresponding move. Gonzalez had been sidelined since June 22 with a right shoulder strain and did not make any Minor League rehab starts.
"Those are dicey," Rockies manager Bud Black said of Desmond's injury. "You look at the track record of guys who have calf strains, they're tough, they're really tough. I think we felt, overall, probably the prudent thing to do was to put him on the DL, even though it might have been a very slight chance he might have bounced back in 3-4 days. With the All-Star break coming, I think it made the most sense."
After making the grab, Desmond was slow to get up and was escorted off the field by team trainers. Desmond underwent an MRI before arriving at Coors Field for Monday's game against the Reds.
"It's unfortunate that they decided to make the decision without asking me how I felt," Desmond said. "It's tough. I feel like in my career I've done a pretty good job managing my body, and I felt this was something I could manage."
Desmond acknowledged his absence heading into the All-Star break will give Raimel Tapia a chance to see more action in left field for the Rockies. Tapia, the Rockies' No. 3 prospect according to MLBPipeline.com, finished a single short of the cycle against the Reds on Monday.
"I appreciate them exercising caution, and I look forward to seeing what Tapia can do. He got us off to a great start tonight, and he's a great player, so I have no doubt that he'll be able to fill in."
Worth noting
• Gerardo Parra is scheduled to begin a three-game rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Albuquerque.
Parra has been on the DL with a right quad strain since June 6. The Gold Glove Award-winning outfielder spent batting practice Monday working at first base, and he said he will also play first during his rehab. Parra has made 21 career appearances at first base, 17 of which were starts, all coming since he joined the Rockies before the 2016 season.
If all goes according to plan, Parra will likely return Friday in the series opener against the White Sox at Coors Field.
• Rockies Minor Leaguer Ryan Carpenter was named Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week for June 26-July 2.
Carpenter, a 26-year-old left-hander, gave up just three runs on nine hits in 14 innings of work for Albuquerque last week. He struck out 18 batters while walking just two.
The southpaw has spent seven years in the Minors and the past four seasons in the Rockies' system. He was originally drafted by the Rays in the seventh round of the 2011 Draft, and the Rockies signed him as a Minor League free agent in May 2014.
