Hall of Fame pitcher Rollie Fingers is rejoining the A's as a special assistant to the president, the club announced Wednesday.
Fingers, a seven-time All-Star and three-time World Series champion with the A's, joins Rickey Henderson and Dennis Eckersley as an alumni ambassador for Oakland. The 17-year Major League veteran will "help advise the club and represent the team at community and fan events."
"I am excited to be part of the 50th anniversary team," Fingers said in a statement. "I can't believe that it's been that long since I put on an A's uniform as a player in 1968. I look forward to working with the club and connecting with our fans."
Fingers, 71, is one of the most decorated relievers in big league history. He won both the American League Most Valuable Player Award and the AL Cy Young Award with the Brewers in 1981, and he went 67-61 with a 2.91 ERA in 1,016 innings over nine seasons with the A's.
Inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in 1992, Fingers went 114-118 with a 2.90 ERA in 1,701 1/3 career innings with the A's, Padres and Brewers. The right-hander ranks 13th in Major League history with 341 saves.
Fingers is scheduled to be honored prior to Oakland's Opening Night game on Friday, March 30, along with fellow members of the A's 50th anniversary team.
"As we celebrate our 50th anniversary season, it is only fitting Rollie joins us as an A's ambassador," team president Dave Kaval said. "He is one of the greatest players to ever wear an Oakland jersey and an essential part of our history and tradition."
