Roman Anthony has transferred his rehab from a partially torn tendon in his right ring finger to Fort Myers, Fla., Red Sox manager Chad Tracy said this weekend. While the move does not signify a change in timeline for the young star, it’s an attempt to “get away from all he’s doing” and focus on his recovery.
“The other stuff being just the day-to-day of being at Fenway, he's going to get asked questions about it constantly,” Tracy said. “And for him being (in Florida), his focus is on one thing right now, and that's getting yourself healthy.”
The club also said Anthony, on the IL since May 7, is scheduled to see hand specialist Dr. Gary Lourie in Atlanta this week, though a specific date was not disclosed.
Anthony’s latest update came on June 16 -- six weeks after he suffered the injury on a check-swing foul ball. Imaging showed he is healing properly from the injury.
“He may see another doctor this week just for peace of mind to see where healing's at,” Tracy said. “I expect we're going to be in a good spot, but really just about getting him in a spot where he can focus each day on just pounding away, getting that hand healthy.”
Anthony, 22, remains without a specific timeline to return because he has dealt with lingering discomfort when trying to swing. His initial hitting program was shut down on May 28, and he was transferred to the 60-day IL on June 28.
“We want him,” Tracy said. “We want him in the lineup. So I'm going to keep in touch with him frequently and see how he's doing with the hope that we get him back.”
