KANSAS CITY -- The Royals on Saturday activated right-hander Chris Young from the disabled list and optioned left-hander Brian Flynn to Triple-A Omaha.
Manager Ned Yost said Young will be his long reliever in the bullpen for now.
"But will he be part of the rotation again down the road?" Yost said. "I would have to say yes."
Young has been recovering from a right forearm strain.
Flynn was 1-0 with a 4.91 ERA in five relief appearances. However, Yost said Flynn would go to Omaha to transition to a starting role.
"We're just a little thin in terms of starters there," Yost said. "So we're going to stretch him out. It's a need right now."
