First walk-off knock! 2026's No. 6 pick delivers in clutch at High-A

It may be only five games into Zion Rose’s pro career, but so far, things have been coming up, well, roses.
The Royals’ 2026 first-round pick delivered a walk-off knock for High-A Quad Cities on Friday night, securing a 5-4 win for the home Modern Woodmen Park audience over visiting Fort Wayne.
The game was tied when Rose, currently the Royals’ No. 6 prospect, came to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning. With fellow top prospect Asbel Gonzalez (KC No. 15) on second base, Rose took two balls from right-hander Sean Barnett (Padres) before a called strike and a foul ball dialed up some pressure. Unfazed, the 21-year-old outfielder ripped a single down the first-base line into the right-field corner, bringing home Gonzalez.
Rose finished the game 2-for-5, already his second multihit contest. His first came in his second pro appearance last Friday, a performance that also featured not only his first, but his second, third and fourth stolen bases as well. He has since added two more steals and is yet to be caught on the basepaths.
While Rose has burst onto the High-A scene, he has long been a big name in baseball circles. A longtime standout on the MLB Develops circuit, Rose was a top Draft prospect in the 2023 class as a high schooler before deciding to attend Louisville.
As a sophomore for the Cardinals, he was one of just six NCAA Division I players to have at least 30 extra-base hits and 30 stolen bases. His junior season was hampered by injuries, but he still finished second on the team with 24 stolen bases, while leading in batting average (.417).
After the Royals selected him sixth overall last month, he showcased some big swings in the Bridge League, scrimmage games that help -- you guessed it -- to bridge the gap between the Complex League seasons and the autumn instructional leagues.
Rose's first taste of pro ball will be abbreviated with just over three weeks left in the season in the regular season. But he's already adding impressive firsts to his résumé.
