Daring squirrel safely navigates high-wire act at Citi Field

A ballpark is one of the best places to spend a summer evening.

Apparently, even squirrels agree.

A squirrel spent much of Tuesday night’s Mets-Brewers game perched atop a mesh netting down the third-base line at Citi Field.

The bushy-tailed critter first entered the field of play in the third inning. The squirrel descended from a netting next to the Mets’ dugout on the first-base side, catching the attention of Mets interim manager Andy Green and outfielder Carson Benge, who stood in the on-deck circle. The squirrel scampered into foul territory near home plate while third baseman Bo Bichette took his turn at-bat.

A brief delay ensued as the squirrel acclimated to its new surroundings. Perhaps a bit frazzled, the animal ran its way down the third-base line -- in front of the Brewers’ dugout -- where catcher Gary Sánchez attempted to feed it sunflower seeds. Eventually, in between innings, the squirrel sprung back into the stands and summited the netting.

Once the squirrel found a perch, it stayed there for multiple innings -- maybe afraid, maybe content. Either way, who can blame it? It was a great view from which to watch a baseball game.
