LA Rams owner Kroenke reaches agreement to buy Angels
ANAHEIM -- Arte Moreno’s tenure as Angels owner is coming to an end, as Los Angeles Rams owner Stan Kroenke has entered an agreement to purchase the club, with the transaction expected to become official in the first quarter of 2027, pending Major League approval.
It ends Moreno’s 23-year tenure as owner since he bought the club in 2003. The Angels had early success, winning six division titles (2004-05, ’07-09 and ’14) but have struggled over the last decade. They haven’t had a winning record since 2015 and currently have a 53-85 record that’s tied for the worst mark in the AL.
“The Angels are a storied franchise anchored in a great market,” Kroenke said in a statement released by both the Angels and Kroenke Sports & Entertaiment. “We look forward to an exciting future with the Angels organization.”
It’s been a season marked by change for the organization, as longtime club president John Carpino retired and was replaced by Molly Jolly while general manager Perry Minasian was fired in early June. The Angels hired former longtime Cardinals GM John Mozeliak as interim GM and he helped oversee the Draft, the Trade Deadline that saw them move seven players, and a recent front office shakeup. Mozeliak’s contract ends in December, and he has stated he hasn’t decided if he’ll remain with the organization but remains tasked with helping find a new GM.
But it still comes as a surprise for Moreno to decide to sell, as he said during Spring Training that he had no interest in selling at that time. The 80-year-old previously explored selling in 2022, only to decide to keep his stake in the franchise.
“The Angels Organization is pleased to announce this transaction with Kroenke Sports & Entertainment,” Moreno said in a press release. “The Moreno Family has been honored to steward the Angels for 23 years and we believe with KSE’s experience and success they are the best next owner for the franchise. The Angels Organization looks forward to continuing its commitment to the fans, our employees, the players and our business partners.”
Kroenke owns the NFL’s Rams and developed SoFi Stadium and the surrounding 300-acre Hollywood Park district in Inglewood. KSE also owns the Denver Nuggets (NBA), Colorado Avalanche (NHL), Colorado Rapids (MLS), Colorado Mammoth (NLL), and Arsenal Football Club (Premier League).
The Rams won Super Bowl LVI and are considered the favorites to win the title again this season while the Nuggets won the 2023 NBA Finals and the Avalanche won the Stanley Cup in 2001 and ’22. The Rapids also won the MLS Cup in 2010 while Arsenal won the 2025-26 Premier League title.
