D-backs outfielder Steven Souza Jr. will undergo season-ending surgery to repair an ACL tear, LCL tear, partial PCL tear and posterior lateral capsule tear in his left knee, manager Torey Lovullo announced Tuesday.

Souza collapsed after stepping awkwardly on home plate during Monday's 6-3 loss to the White Sox during an exhibition game at Chase Field. He was carried off the field by two D-backs trainers.

Souza missed most of 2018 because of injuries -- playing in only 72 games. He hit .220 with five home runs and 29 RBIs in 272 plate appearances in '18.

The D-backs do have options with Souza out for the year. The club could use Adam Jones in right field and give Ketel Marte more playing time in center. They could also call up outfielder Matt Szczur, who can play all three positions. The promotion of IIdemaro Vargas would provide more depth in the infield and free up Marte to roam center.

Outfielder Socrates Brito was placed on outright waivers and is not an option. If Brito clears waivers, he could be added to Triple-A Reno.
