McFarland to serve as 26th man for twin bill

BALTIMORE -- The Orioles recalled left-hander T.J. McFarland from Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday to serve as the 26th man during the day-night doubleheader against the Rays.
McFarland, who was sent back to Norfolk most recently on June 18, started for the Tides on Monday. He allowed four runs in five innings on eight hits, but he hasn't pitched since -- providing the O's with a fresh arm.
"We got two games, so I'm going to be getting some innings," McFarland said. "Fortunately, we are able to have one extra arm."
In the Orioles' other doubleheader earlier in the season, on May 7 against the Athletics, McFarland was added as the club's 26th man for the second game. He didn't pitch in the contest, though.
McFarland has pitched in 13 games for the O's this season, allowing 12 runs in 21 innings (5.14 ERA).
While he hasn't started any games for Baltimore this year, McFarland has started four times in Norfolk. He could provide multiple innings in relief if either O's starter is forced out early on Saturday.
"I was able to just get stretched out and use a lot of pitches and attack hitters in different ways," McFarland said of Monday's start in Triple-A.
Manager Buck Showalter used four relievers in the series opener on Friday after an off-day, accounting for the final 3 2/3 innings after starter Yovani Gallardo exited with one out in the sixth.
