Make it back-to-back-to-back-to-back world championships for Team USA.
The Americans claimed their fourth consecutive U-18 World Baseball Softball Confederation World Cup title Sunday, rolling past Korea, 8-0, in the gold medal game at Port Arthur Stadium in Thunder Bay, Canada. The victory capped a dominant tournament for Team USA in which it went 9-0. This marked the second time a USA Baseball 18U National Team has gone undefeated in World Cup competition, joining the 1989 squad that went 7-0.
Team USA's 16th consecutive victory overall in WBSC U-18 World Cup action was kick-started by the same solid starting pitching the team enjoyed all tournament. Matthew Liberatore tossed six shutout innings while holding Korea scoreless on just four hits. Cole Wilcox, Mason Denaburg and JT Ginn took the ball from there, each pitching one scoreless frame to seal the American's sixth shutout of the tournament. Team USA's tournament ERA overall was a miniscule 0.47 thanks to just four earned runs allowed.
That left Team USA's offense plenty of time to get in a groove, and it did so by scoring three runs in the third, four in the fourth, and another in the fifth. Triston Casas hit a two-run homer on his way to winning the tournament's MVP award.
Team USA had five players selected to the tournament's All-World team: Ethan Hankins, Brice Turang, Mike Siani, Alek Thomas and Casas. Brandon Dieter earned the best ERA award in the tournament at 0.00.
