J.D. Martinez exits with foot sprain vs. Miami

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Tigers right fielder J.D. Martinez left Saturday's 5-4 win over the Marlins after stumbling on a shoestring catch in the first inning. He was diagnosed with a mid-right-foot sprain after X-rays came back negative, and he will be re-evaluated on Sunday.
Martinez made a highlight catch to end the Marlins' first-inning threat, robbing Tyler Moore of what would have been an RBI bloop single. But Martinez was limping as he walked off the field at the end of the inning.
"I tried to slide and catch it, and then I realized that I was gonna catch it in the air," Martinez said. "So then I tried to put my foot in to catch it, and I just kind of rolled my foot a little bit."
Martinez appeared to realize something might be serious, because he was initially heading toward the clubhouse. He was called back to the dugout for the bottom of the inning, but Alex Presley pinch-hit for him. He was favoring his right leg as head athletic trainer Kevin Rand accompanied him to the clubhouse at inning's end.
Martinez left the ballpark in a walking boot, which he will wear overnight. Rand said it's too soon to give a timetable, but that they hope to know more once Martinez checks in Sunday.
"We'll see about it tomorrow," Martinez said. "I know as much about it as you guys do. It's good that I'm able to move on it."
Martinez missed a few days earlier this spring with a pectoral injury. He had been on a tear in recent days after an early slump. He entered the day batting .216 with two home runs and three RBIs.
