Fulmer in command with 2 scoreless vs. Jays

DUNEDIN, Fla. -- Michael Fulmer gave up three hits over two scoreless innings for the Detroit Tigers in his second Grapefruit League start as Detroit beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 5-4, at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium on Wednesday.
Fulmer, the 2016 American League Rookie of the Year Award winner, allowed a leadoff double to Kevin Pillar in the first inning but struck out José Bautista and Justin Smoak to end the threat.
The Blue Jays got the leadoff batter on base again in the second inning and had two runners on with one out, but Fulmer got Ryan Goins to ground into a 4-6-3 double play.

"It was a lot better today, a lot better," Fulmer said. "I felt like I was commanding the ball a lot better on both sides of the plate. I was happy with my offspeed stuff today. I was glad with the way the slider was and the changeup as well."
The Tigers got to Blue Jays right-hander Joe Smith in the second inning, when catcher James McCann hit an RBI double to score Steven Moya and Dixon Machado added an RBI single to give Detroit a 2-0 lead.

Blue Jays outfielder Dalton Pompey hit a solo home run in the seventh inning to make the score 5-4.
Toronto starter Ryan Tepera pitched one scoreless inning and left-hander Ryan Borucki, who was originally scheduled to start Wednesday, pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
Tigers up next:Justin Verlander will make his second start of the spring Thursday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. ET when the Tigers host the Pirates at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Fla. The game can be heard on Gameday Audio. Verlander gave up one hit over two innings in his first start on Saturday.
